Atopic dermatitis

What is Atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis (AD) also known as atopic eczema or eczema As they get older the back of the knees and front of the elbows are the most common area for the rash. In adults the hands and feet are most affected.

The cause is believed to involve a number of factors including: genetics, immune system dysfunction, environmental exposures, and difficulties with the permeability of the skin. The diagnosis is based on the signs and symptoms. Other diseases that need to be excluded are contact dermatitis, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis.

Treatment involves avoiding things that make it worse, daily bathing with application of a moisturising cream afterwards, applying steroid creams when flares occur, and medications to help with itchiness. Antibiotics (either by mouth or topically) may be needed if infections develop.

It affects more than 10% of children in the United States and is more common in younger children. Most people outgrow it. It has been given names like "prurigo Besnier," "neurodermatitis," "endogenous eczema," "flexural eczema," "infantile eczema," and "prurigo diathésique".

Questions and answers on "Atopic dermatitis"

I was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis. I did not respond to normal medication and my dermatologist suggested I take steroids - Zempred 16mg(3 tablets on Saturday and Sunday), Azoran 50mg (one in the morning and one at night), Dazit (mornings) and Teczine (at night). I responded well to this dosage. After 2 months of this dosage, the dosage was reduced to 2tablets of Zempred 16mg on Saturdays and Sundays, and the others remained the same. Now, my dermatitis is back and my dermatologist is at a loss as to why this is happening. Any help?

You will need to remain on the same dose for some more time. You can also...
