Acromioclavicular joint

What is Acromioclavicular joint?

Also known as the AC joint. It is a shoulder joint, formed by the union of acromion and the clavicle on the top of the shoulder. It helps us in raising our arms above our head and also in rotation of arms.

Questions and answers on "Acromioclavicular joint"

I had major AC joint surgery a few years ago on my right shoulder . I tore all three ligaments completely. My movement is good and strength is pretty good although not near as strong as my left. I have started to lift weights again and I think I can get the strength back. However, my biggest concern is cosmetic. The repaired shoulder appears slouched and is nowhere near a broad as the left. Is there anything I can do or any procedures that can be done to fix this?

doctor1 MD

I have read your case and I believe that if the function is fine then try to avoid surgery as further surgery unlikely to improve your function or make it cosmetically better.

Continue exercises and the muscles around shoulder should get better shape.

Regarding further procedure you need to be...

Hello,
You should first have a MRI of our shoulder to have a complete diagnosis of this problem. There can be tendon injury to shoulder which may need surgery.

Hope this will help you.

I had a MRI of the right shoulder without IV contrast. Conclusion: 1) Mild arthrosis of the acromioclavicular joint space. 2) No evidence of rotator cuff tear. 3) Normal biceps labral complex. 4) Small non specific subcoracoid joint effusion.

I have been in severe pain for months (especially difficult just trying to sleep). Intense physical therapy and medication have done little in my case. Is surgery needed?

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
MRI shows no major damage

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

According to the MRI Report you do not have any serious conditions like Rotator cuff tear or Biceps tendon disorders which usually cause pain.

You just have mild arthritis of the acromio-clavicular joint of...

I would like to address my question to Dr. XXXXXXX Chail: Dr. Chail,
Since my last question, I did have a Thursday april23, 2015 appointment with Dr. XXXXXXX Stapleton. I researched to find he specializes in shoulder diagnosis and also is a member of the Medical School faculty of Mercer University of Macon, XXXXXXX He ordered an MRI on my shoulder and my May 11th appointment he discussed his decision to order four weeks of Physical Therapy for a severely pinched nerve. I also had received a reply from the Medical Composite Board during my April 23rd appointment. Currently, have two treatments of rehabilitation left and each treatment I was asked to describe my pain level. I told the Occupational Therapist I wanted to have a follow up appointment with Dr. Stapleton to see how he read her treatment notes. Ortho Georgia's MRI department had scheduled the follow up appointment so that I would also be waiting among patients that are shoulder patients that are in canvass shoulder splints and also long term orthopedic patients with injuries that are transported by non emergency ambulance from long term rehabilitation centers. I was lucky I chose that local hospital outpatient treatment center recently opened because they had asked for the police report that reads the driver was unattentive when I was struck in the cross walk while riding my bicycle in it. The driver did come to a full stop and also was required to adhere to the red light where I had a green light. But, the driver choose to drive into the cross walk while I was still in it.

Can you please explain to me what my results below about my shoulder mean? What kind of follow up do you recommend. Thank you!
Results of MR arthrogram of my right shoulder. There is no evidence of fluid or contrast in the subacromial subdeltiod bursa. There is an abnormal appearance to the inferior rim of the glenoid and in the posterior inferior aspect of the labrum, this is likely the sequelae of previous impaction type injury with subsequent sclerosis and scarring in the region, i.e. a Perthes type lesion. There is some linear high signal seen in the superior labrum posteriorly on the coronal T1 fat-suppressed sequences which may represent a superior sulcus. The humeral head has a normal contour and the acromiohumeral distance is normal. Patient has an os acromiale which may predispose to impingement type symptomatology. There is no evidence of significant degenerative changes at the acromioclavicular joint. No soft tissue abnormalities are identified.

doctor1 MD

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Your MRI is suggestive of mild scarring at the site of previous surgery.
There is evidence of non fusion of the acromion process of scapula leading to formation of a small free bone called os acromiale.
Such a non fused bone can cause pain on doing overhead...

Hi XXXXXXX here. for good 18mo i noticed a small swelling of my right sterno clavicle. it is now noticably enlarged, i get a lot of tingling down my arm, the ac joint aches especially when i raise arm above my head. however, 2 nights ago I experienced SOB, and started to wonder about whether this growth is compressing the vital pulmonary blood vessels? I did have this checked out by CT scan one year ago. findings then were general degeneration and lots of tiny bone cysts. i have made an appt with my GP for next week. i have hx of polyarthritis since childhood, especially right hip, knee & joints and have had 3 surgeries to correct ; this feels different. I get tingling, my right arm feels cold and weaker, and dull pain in chest and shoulder and recent SOB??

doctor1 MD

Hi XXXXXXX

As a cardiovascular specialist I will try to give some salvation to your query.

Since you have polyarthritis, it is common that it can involve any joint including sternoclavicular joint.
It is enlarging in size, but CT scan was taken long back. A new CT scan will tell whether this is...
