Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Our daughter is a severe heroin addict ( she is 27, no longer works) and was prescribed suboxone, we are worried that this may make her terrible situation worse. She was out of money and options and we believe she was drug seeking when she went to the ER and threatened suicide to be admitted and get drugs. Can this really help an active addict that is on her own? Doesn't this put her at greater risk of overdose and death?
No, Suboxone does not increase the risk of overdose but is safer than other opioids in terms of risk of death from overdose. Risk of respiratory depression is very less with Suboxone even in overdose. It also reduces the anti-social and drug seeking behavior that is very common in heroin dependent people. In my opinion, you should encourage your daughter to quit heroin and get on Suboxone instead.
Best wishes.
