Question: What is the connection if any between NHL and chromium containing metal on metal hip replacements. I developed non Hodgkins Lymphoma two years after receiving a metal on metal hip resurfacing product which emits Chromium ions into the bloodstream.

Hi,

Thanks for your query.

Chromium liberated by such artificial joint prosthesis does cause many serious side effects.

Most common being the local reaction induced by metal ions , cause deterioration of the tissue, loosen the artificial hip and result in other serious complications.

When the metal enters the blood stream, it may cause a number of other health problems, potentially impacting the nervous system, heart and thyroid glands.

Also a less studied effect of Chromium ions is on the immune cells like plasma cells , lymphocytes and antigen presenting cells. Its then when the lymphocytes are affected conditions like Lymphomas can arise. The molecular mechanism of such a complication is still under study. There are cases which have registered many other immune related problems with an Hip replacement surgeries.

Once the disease had developed the treatment of it is the only best approach, there is no difference between ones due to chromium and ones due to other cause.

Hope I answered your query.

Wish you good health.
