My 78 year old mother moans like she is in severe pain while she is napping in her recliner....she does not do it at night when sleeping in her bed....although she only sleeps in her bed gor about 3 hours at most....and then comes downstaires to her recliner...when I wake her she says she does not know why she does it and that she is not in pain.....it is loud and very annoying....whats up...is this something old people do? And is it a stage for the COPD?

hello
if she says that she is not suffering from any pain and as you say that it is with specific posture than
what i think is that she must be having some nasal obstruction due to which sound comes while she breathes in sleep
i would suggest that you pay a visit to your ENT surgeon and probably he will provide with some nasal decongestant that will eradicate the problem
hope that helps

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Your mother seems having exertional breathness due to long standing COPD.

Because of lung involvement in COPD, there may be shortage of oxygen while walking or exertion leading to breathlessness.

She needs physical examination by a physician to evaluate her lung function, cardiac function.

Hence consult the doctor for physical examination and investigations.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
