What Are The Side Effects Of Sitagliptin On The Pancreas And Kidney?

Dear Dr., I am Type II diabetic for around 12 years. My HBA1c is 7 % two days back. My Fasting Sugar is 150/160 and PPS is 220/225. My BP is under control for 12 years and presently taking Newtel 20.

I have been now advised by an expert senior doctor when I went for a second opinion, to take ISTA MET 50/1000 as 1-0-1 alongwith Reclide MR 60 as 1-0-0. Also with a recent observation on cholesterol this Doctor has now added ATORSAVE-D-10 as 0-0-1.

My problem at this stage is my family doctor who has treating me for long after seeing my above test readings, had already advised a week back to change over from VOGs GM2 to ISTA MET 50/500 as 1/2-0-1/2 only and not Reclide MR 60.

My confusion now is which to follow, more so in the background of the side effects Sitagliptin's side effect on the pancreas and kidney. I am aged 60 and I have just started having frequent urination problem sometimes in the night.

Please advice.

Hello,
There is absolutely no problem in following any schedule.
The most important thing is to keep your blood sugar levels in tight control so as to avoid future micro as well macrovascular comolications.
As far side effects of SITAGLIPTIN are concerned, they can occur but are rare.
Side effects on pancreas includes acute pancreatitis.
Kidney side effects include worsening of renal condition.
As far as your urination problem is concerned,it could be due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels or the development of prostate enlargement and not due to the side effect of SITAGLIPTIN.
However one advised to keep a check on renal function while on SITAGLIPTIN.
Acute prolonged abdominal pain with or without vomiting should be immediately reported as it could be due to acute pancreatitis.
Don't fear the medications as generally all medicines carry some or other side effects.
Thanks
