Is Surgery Required For Almost Closed Carotid Artery?

My husband has a carotid artery that is 98% closed and the other is about 60% closed. they are sending him for tests to determine the blockage, will he need surgery? Also will he have to be off work for a long time? I want to be sure he doesn t go back before he should. My email address is YYYY@YYYY

Hi and welcome to HCM. Treatment options for patients diagnosed with partially blocked carotid arteries but without symptoms such as a mini-stroke, or transient blindness in one eye, should be carefully considered and recommendation made on an individualized basis. A partial blockage (greater than 60 percent) in patients without symptoms carries a risk of stroke of about 2 percent each year. A surgery called Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is strongly considered for symptomatic patients with 70 to 99 percent blockage in carotid artery. Many Doctors agree that for most patients with moderate to severe blockage, surgery is the safest and most effective treatment, if it is done by a surgical team that has a very low complication rate. During CEA, a surgeon makes an incision (cut) in the neck and removes plaque buildup from a carotid artery. This helps restore normal blood flow through the artery. Post operatively their are many things that a patient should follow which your treating doctor will advice.All the best. Regards.
