Posted on Fri, 9 May 2014
Question: Good evening, I just had specific labwork done due to suspecting Hypothyroidism. Almost lost outer third of eyebrows, have dry skin, have gained weight, itchy extremities and muscle pains. Lab results are not remarkable. T4 is 6.3, T3 Uptake is 25, Free Thyroxine Index is 1.6, TSH is 2.77 and TPO Ab 9. Family History: Mother suffers from Hypothyroidism. Please let me know what you would recommend. Thank you!

Brief Answer: This is not suggestive of hypothyroidism Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have been experiencing. Though these symptoms are suggestive of hypothyroidism, the laboratory values have failed to confirm this. All values are within the normal range except for TPO which is borderline normal. Did you get your lipid panel checked also as it is a common abnormality in hypothyroid states? If I were your physician and no other cause is identified to explain these symptoms, I will suggest that you get a therapeutic trial with a low dose of synthroid. This would be monitored and evaluated over 2-3weeks to see if your symptoms would be improved or not. Should they improve, then you may want to continue with the drugs and if no improvement, they should be discontinued. In all, the laboratory values do no justify the diagnosis tough your symptoms seem so typical. A therapeutic trial with low dose synthroid if no other cause is identified may be helpful. Talk to your doctor and hear what he thinks. I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Brief Answer: Grossly borderline normal! Detailed Answer: Hi and thanks for these updated results. The lipid profile is on the upper border of normal but not too grossly alarming. Vitb12 is normal while vitD is very much lower than the expected normal values. Seen multiple abnormal results, I will recommend that you consult an endocrinologist who would look into all of these results and make a unifying diagnosis to explain all of these abnormalities. I hope this helps. I wish you well. Dr. Ditah, MD.
