What Causes Sciatica In The Foot?

I have sciatica on my left side only. Is this what is affecting my foot? My foot feels like its being stretched like a rubberband on top of the foot along with the arch aching and the same with surrounding ankle area. Sometimes BOTH feet swell as well.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thank you for posting.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns.

The most common case of sciatica neuritis is spinal herniated disc.
Other causes are lumbar spinal stenosis and lumbar arthritis.

The diagnosis is determined by:
1. Lumbar Ct-scan.
2. MRI(Magnetic resonance imaging).
3. Complete blood count.
4. Urine test.

If the results show that you suffer from arthritis, the treatment will contain anti inflammatory non steroidal medicines.

If the tests show that you suffer from herniated disc, the treatment will contain anti inflammatory non steroidal medicines. If this treatment fails, then you will need surgery.

Consult your neurologist.

I hope this information is helpful.

Take Care.
Dr. Behar.
