White Patches At Back Of Throat, Negative Rapid Strep Test. What Is It?

I had a tonsil stone when I woke up this morning, and in the very back of my throat (not visible unless i push my tongue down with a q-tip) there are white patches that resemble the ones I get when I have strep . But these patches are farther back and lower on the tonsils than when I have strep. My rapid strep text came back negative. What do I have?

Hello and thank you for your question.
You most likely have tonsiliths. These are clusters of calcified material that form in the crevices of the tonsils. They can be hard, firm or somewhat soft. They are materials that can get entrapped in the crevices of the tonsils. Best way to get rid of them is to have your tonsils removed. Just because the rapid test has come back negative does not mean the 24 hour test will. You still may have a strep infection.

Best regards

Dr. Ward
