Prescribed Oxycodone For Dental Abscess. Is It Safe To Take?

My brother had a reaction to IV morphine......felt like someone was sitting on his chest as a fourteen yr old. He has a dental abscess (now 27 yrs) and has been prescribed oxycodone. He has not taken any yet as I reminded him about this reaction as a child. Do you think it is safe for him to take as he is in terrible pain.

welcome to HCM!

I have read your query carefully and see that your brother is suffering from dental abcess and is currently having pain which is unbearable. He has sort of reaction to morphine when taken in childhood.

I think it will be good to avoid oxycodone (as you have not told his doctor about his past history of reaction to morphine).

For severe sharp pain -- I have found patient showing good response to injection diclofenac sodium with metocloperamide injection, both given in separate syringes, imtarmuscular. It will be safe for him and effective, (gives response in minutes)!

Please inform your doctor next time when you see him about your brother' s reaction to morphine, as he might need some pain killer for few days.
