Arm Pain, Bicep Swelling After Exercising. Is This Normal?

I was a doing an arm workout at the gym two days ago (bicep curls, triceps dips, etc) and when i went to bed that night my arm felt fine. I woke up in the middle of the night with a sharp pain in both my arms. I can t straighten them, there is swelling on the bicep, and i can t move/ touch my arm without pain. I frequently work out, and i have never experienced muscle soreness like this before. It s been two days, and advil , icing, heating pads, and muscle creams like voltaren aren t helping. Is this normal? How can I relieve the pain?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
It sounds like you have a tendonitis or a bursitis related to both of your biceps tendons although this is somewhat unusual. You are doing all of the right things. You may want to be assessed to make sure that your tendons are intact and you have not rupture them. I would go and see a physiotherapist would can offer pulsed ultrasound treatment as this has been shown to be beneficial in cases of tendonitis. An orthopaedic surgeon may be willing to inject local anaesthetic and cortisone around the tendons if your symptoms are ongoing although tis would carry with it a risk of tendon rupture.
