Question: Hi, I am a male who for the past 12 years or so has not been feeling very well, and it seems to be getting worse. I'm currently 29, and since I was 16 I feel like I'm living in a "fog", where my cognitive abilities arent very good and I
often feel extremly tired and lethargic.
Other symptoms include
lymph nodes in my neck that swell regularly, and an intolerance to heat - During the warmer months I sweat very heavily, which also makes me go pale and feel a bit weak. I sweat so noticibly and so profusely that people often comment on it. Also, about 3 years after I started feeling ill, my arms became very skinny and look almost like all the fat in them has wasted away. The rest of my body is normal looking (except for a slight gut), and I currently weigh 90kg. The biggest concern for me is the fact that I'm also extremely fatigued - I can easily sleep for 12 - 14 hours per day and I never, ever, feel rested.
Some days are better than others, and about 8 years ago there was a period of about 2 weeks where I felt 100% healthy, and then I went right back to being as sick as I always am. I thought maybe it was related to my diet, so have tried
period's of no-alcohol, no-caffeine, no-refined-sugar, and generally eating healthier, but nothing I have tried seems
to work. When I was going through that 2 weeks of feeling healthy, people commented on how good I looked, and the fact that I didnt look as tired and as washed out as I usually do.
Other things that have happened regularly over the years are periods where I feel like I'm going to lose my balance whilst walking and need to sit down, XXXXXXX blackouts where it's like all the lights in the room go out for a split second, and there has been a few occasions where I have these episodes where all of a sudden it feels like all the energy in my body is being sapped out, I go extremely pale, sweat very heavily regarldess of the temperature, and feel like I am going to pass out. Also, one of my testes is always swollen and sore - I've had multiple courses of antibiotics but it never go's away.
2 things happened around the time I started getting sick - I had a bought of
glandular fever (mono), and I was having unprotected sex with a woman I later found was having unprotected sex with multiple other men. I was so scared that I had an
STD such as
HIV that it took me a couple of years to build up the courage to get an STD test (but was careful not to sleep with anyone else during this time). When I got the results, they showed I tested negative to HIV plus all the other regular STDs they test for.
I have been to a few doctors, and the one I am seeing at the moment has been extremely helpful, but after multiple tests we havent found out what the cause is. He has seen my reaction to heat, knows that I'm dealing with extreme fatigue, and has seen how thin my arms have become, and definitely agrees that there is something wrong with me. I was hoping to get someone else's opinion who could shed some light on what might be causing this.
Lastly, I'm concerned about how terrible I look and how fast I'm aging. I look visibly sick almost all of the time, with pale waxy skin and
dark circles under my eyes, and fy face looks so whethered these days that althought I'm only nearly 30, people say that I look about 45. I believe that it is because of all the
stress my body has been under all these years, as I generally try to keep myself as fit and healthy as I can (apart from this ongoing illness) Does it have something to do with the glandular fever I had all those years ago? It just seems like my body might still be fighting it off? Or maybe an STD, or some other kind of infection? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
