What Is The Cause For Blood Discharge With An Ileostomy Bag?

Hi, my 23 yr old daughter has had an ileostomy bag for 3 weeks now and 2 days ago she was having some pains in the area and no discharge for about 6 hours then the discharge started and appeared normal. The on-call nurse told her that it was probably just a blockage and all should be ok. Today she called me and said that about 30% of the bag content was bright red blood. She called the doctor and was told that if it continued, go to the ER. If not, then get with the doctor on Tuesday (3 days from now). We are very concerned about this. What could be causing this blood discharge? Thank you in advance. Bill

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
This is a recently performed ileostomy, and it takes weeks together for the settlement of an ileostomy. The bleeding probably would have been from a ruptured blood vessel form an inflamed mucosal lining. You certainly should rush the patient to ER. She may need hospitalization for further observation if the bleeding continues and may also need re-exploration of some sort if the bleeding is from deep within.
