What Is The Remedy For Pectus Excavatum?

Question: My son is 18. He has pectus excavatum, pretty severe. The last couple of years he has had some major gastro intestinal issues. Every morning at 6:30 am he will vomit dark yellow bile. Then is too ill to eat for several hours. Gastroenterologist tested every thing. Everything normal. So they say its IBS. I don't agree. Very minimal diarrhea, vomiting every morning. And his stomach is very active all night. He also has asthma. No antacid helps at all. We give him gravel at night before bed, so that stops the vomiting but doesn't fix it. We recently took him to an osteopath . She said pectus excavatum very pronounced, his heart is way to the left and is crushing his already reduced lung capacity because of asthma. She said stomach is in right area but is tilted and food is not draining properly, so the food sits in there and causes gas. Also the duodenum (Jeff also says theres a lot of pain there) is not soft and pliable in XXXXXXX It feels like a lead pipe. She thinks that is also tilted and can't function properly. She thinks it's definitely an alignment problem and could be corrected with surgery on his chest. This would create more room for everything and then things could be aligned properly. Does this should reasonable?

Brief Answer: Should treat pectus excavatum first... Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for sharing the sad history of your son with HCM. I feel sorry for the bad health condition he is in. Having pectus excavatum (pretty severe) is causing such health problems to your son. It is a must to consult an orthopedist as soon as possible in order to get him operated. Once the chest malformation will be corrected, his current health problems will be resolved too. Meanwhile, you can forward the results of his lab works, echo, or other tests he ran in order to assist him further. Vomiting dark yellow bile might also related to any problem of: - stomach (GERD, gastritis) - gallbladder due to the malformation. Apart taking antiacids, he should start omeprazole and other specific treatment depending on the test results. All the best to your XXXXXXX and you too! Dr.Klerida
