Have Diastolic Heart Failure. Swollen Legs, Shortness Of Breath, Weight Gain. What Questions To Ask Doctor?

Hello, I am taking my mother to her cardiologist tomorrow and she is diagnosed with diastolic heart failure . Her legs are swollen all the time, she has shortness of breath with the slightess exertion and she has been gaining weight. She is 86 years old but does not look or act like it. What questions could I ask her doctor to get the most out of this appointment and to help her live and even happier longer life. Thank you. Maura

Dear Ma'm
Thanks for writing to us.
1. The diastolic heart failure is most often associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease or muscle/ valve disorder of heart. Hope everything was ruled out by cardiac ultrasound and other tests. If not, do ask for them.
2. The failure in such cases is precipitated by high volume, high heart rate and high blood pressure. So ask about good control of blood pressure, volume intake in a day and how to kept her heart rate in limits. Do get her kidney functions checked.
3. You are ought to understand her medication well.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
