On Cortisone Shots For De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. Is Surgery Needed To Release The Tendons?

I have been diagnosed with De Quervains tenosynoritis. I received 2 cortisone shots and my doctor is going to add antiflammatory medicine. He said i may need surgery to release the tendon, but said exercise/physical therapy will not help. Do you think physical therapy could help this?

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Though cause for De Quervain's tenosynovitis is not known, it can be brought on by simple strain injury to the extensor pollicus longus tendon. So rest for that muscle is advised not exercise. As exercise results in repeated injury to muscle tendon, which aggravates symptoms.

In most of the patients with this disease cortisone treatment is going to reduce inflammation and symptoms to near normal.Only few patients may need surgery.
bracing is used during future activities that involve repetitive wrist motion.

Hope this helps you.

Regards
