One would "gasp" for air after quitting smoking for the same reasons as a non-smoker might "gasp" for air who has never smoked. In other words, the things are unrelated. If anything, smoking actually reduces lung capacities and stamina to a point where doing exertional activities as simple as walking short distances causes people to run out of breath. The good news is that you quit. Best to you.

Hi Mr Gopal, You seem to be suffering from GERD where stomach acid refluxes into your food pipe. Sometimes the acid can travel to your mouth, especially when sleeping and can go down to your windpipe . This will result in spasm of the throat and gasping. You need treatment with an antacid (pantocid) and a pro-kinetic (perinorm, domperidone). If this fails you will need surgery (Fundoplication).
