Blood Cancer, Is It Curable?

My father recently had mitral valve repair done , he is 65yrs. He did an echo which showed that their was a leak on the said valve. The doctors said that it is nothing to worry about but requires monitoring. My concern is that if the surgery was successful why did this leak occur again. Is this common in valve repair. How serious is this?
