Alcohol Use And Cardiovascular Diseases

I've heard it mentioned that problems associated with prolonged excess alcohol consumption include some cardiovascular diseases, but can anyone tell me which one(s) in particular, and more importantly why this is (ie. what the connection is between alcohol and heart problems)? I know that alcohol use can cause hypertension (directly and/or via weight gain), but is there anything else? I once heard that alcohol somehow 'poisons' the heart muscle, but this sounded a bit too much like old wives' tales...

ATHERIOSCLEROSIS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big fat word for hardening of the arteries... Alcohol begins a downward spiral of heart conditions. Alcohol starts off by (yes ruining the liver) narrowing the arterial walls in the body which increases blood pressure. Just imagine a pipe in your house that gets that calcium build up on the walls. It increases the water pressure while limiting the flow of water. That pressure in humans is called hypertension or high blood pressure. That pressure can lead to a number of problems annyuersms, a dislodged clot etc.... If a clot is to dislodge and gets stuck in your heart it is called a myocardial infarction (MI) which is commonly known as a heart attack. If it gets stuck in your brain its called a cerebral vascular accident or CVA... commonly known as a stroke. See the fun part about this is if you know a little you know that McDonalds can do all this too... Alcohol causes brain damage, kidney damage, and liver damage. If the whites of your eyes are yellow IMEDIATELY go to an ER. You may have hepatitis C. Just an FYI hepatitis is inflamation of the liver which can be also caused by scerosis which is hardening of the liver tissues... that requires a transplant. The heart muscle doesn't gets poisoned by the way... It just slowly gets murdered when you have those heart attacks. Its the liver that is poisoned. Hope that helps
