What Causes Swollen Tongue While Consuming Alcohol?

hi, i am a 20 year old female of normal weight. Ive recently experienced problems while drinking that i have previously not had. I started socially drinking at age 16 without any problems. I would consume whats considered large amounts of alcohol with absolutely no problems whatsoever for the last three and a half years. However, in the last few month every time ive started drinking ive been experiencing a type of reaction. It doesnt matter the amount, or type of alcohol being consumed. Every time with the first sip my throat begins to swell, almost as if i had strep throat. There are no alcohol allergies in my family, so i dont think this is the case. Along with my throat beginning to swell i feel almost like im sick. I get hot and sometimes dizzy. At first i thought maybe my body was becoming sensitive to the wheat in beer, but this is happening with any alcohol. I dont understand what is going on/what could be going on, and why im just now having problems have a few years.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query .

Thanks for you query . The swelling of tongue is occurring due dehydration because of alcohol. Alcohol dehydrate the body specially in case of heavy drinkers . beside that alcohol create deficiency of vitamin B3 , Which is also responsible for tongue swelling.

I would suggest you to :-

- Quit drinking habit.

- Drink 8-9 glasses of water daily to keep yourself hydrate .

- Also take oral rehydration solution .

- Start taking vitaminB3 supplement .

If condition doesn't get resolve in 7-10 days then consult otal pathologist and ENT specialist . Doctor may order blood test or throat swab test to rule out condition like infection of tongue or allergic reaction.

Doctor may prescribe antibiotics or anti allergic drug.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
