Hello,

You are getting food stuck in the throat after eating. You get chocked. Avoid eating too fast, take adequate water, chew food properly. Maintain proper posture while eating food. Taking warm water may help to dissolve food particles. Gargle with salt and warm water 2-3 times daily to feel better and to keep the throat clear.

To loosen any obstruction, you should take soft food like well cooked cereals or bread, banana, etc. To expel food particles try coughing. Yes, such symptoms can occur due to GERD but there are other medical conditions that can also cause such symptoms like achalasia, esophageal stricture, weakness and loss of muscle function leading to impaired swallowing, MS, cancer, etc.

You can take antacids or PPIs, one stat when needed to get rid of discomfort. Get clinically examined by a GP, get blood and imaging tests done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms. Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis made and the severity of your symptoms. Medical treatment commonly given are tracheostomy, esophageal dilatation, glucagon therapy, etc. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
