Wrong Use Of Asacol Causing Black Stools. Stool Culture Normal. On Probiotic. Lot Of Gas. Advice

I had used ASACOL for what I thought was colites. I really messed up my intesting causing my stool to be black. That has passed now . Had blood work done and stool cultures all normal.. taking probiotic now.. We think i have Lactose Intolerance which seem to aggravate it. Going to go to GI doctor as I also have a lot of gas.

Hello,
You say that you have taken Asacol thinking that you have colitis. So it seems that you had colitis like symptoms. OK. The commonest side effects of Asacol (mesalamine) are severe stomach pain, cramping, fever, headache, and bloody diarrhea. You have stopped the drug. Blood and stool investigations are normal. Taking probiotic. You had some problem in the GI tract which made you to take the drug Asacol. You think lactose intolerance is aggravating those symptoms along with gas. You have planned to meet the GI Dr to find out. This is the right pathway. Always consult the Dr confirm the diagnosis and take medicines as per his directions except some OTC pain killers.
