Would The Elevated RDW Be Caused By The Abnormal Menstrual Cycle?

My daughter (17) recently had an abnormal menstrual flow of 18 days. about 10 days later, I had her go in for testing - full panel of lipids, thyroid, a1c, hormones, etc. She had an elevated RDW of 15.1 and a normal range MCV. Would that elevated RDW be caused by the abnormal menstrual cycle? Or can it be an iron deficiency? thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
It is suggestive of Iron deficiency anemia.
The normal red cell distribution width (RDW) level is 10.2 to 14.5%. A high RDW level with a normal MCV level is suggestive of iron deficiency anemia.
It appears to have been caused by abnormal menstrual flow resulting in iron loss. She needs to be examined by a gynecologist for the control of abnormal menstrual flow and the treatment of iron deficiency with iron supplements.
Hope this will help her.
