Would Pencillin Help In Treating Acute Sinusitis And Bad Cough?

Hi I went to the doctors 3 weeks ago and she said I had acute sinusitis , and did not prescibe anything. But I have a bad cough which sometimes is chesty then sometimes dry. My sinisus seem much better but I am left with this annoying cough. I am a smoker, and trying to cut down but I know sounds silly but have to have a cig to stop me from coughing. Would penicillin help. Thanks in advance for your reply..

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if you have Sinusitis that is due to infection and inflammation of sinuses, there is a possibility that it is also causing post nasal drip and it can cause irritation in the throat leading to cough..
Also cough can occur due to causes like bronchitis, allergies, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease etc..

The condition will not resolve without medication and you need to consult an Otolaryngologist or a Pulmonologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like PNS view x ray or MRI scan of sinuses and also chest x ray, sputum culture and blood tests to check for the cause of cough and it can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants like Pseudoephadrine, do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room..
You can also be advised decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
Do warm compresses around nostrils..
You can also be advised cough suppressants like Dextromethorphan and cough expectorant like Guaifenesin..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
