Working Mom, Infant Is Constipated Since The Start Of Nan Ha Gold. Remedy?

I breastfed exclusively for the first 2 months of my baby’s life. I started supplementing with NAN HA Gold at two months - I returned to work at 3 months, and won’t be available to breastfeed during the day, and I wanted to ensure that he is already used to the routine by then. My baby is constipated however, I took him to the doctor at 2 month 2 weeks who advised that I just wait until his system gets used to the formula, but it has been a month since starting breastfeeding supplement and he is still constipated.

Hi Nancy,
This is a very normal reaction to bottle feeds.
Unlike mother's milk when the stool is semisoft and yellowish ,the stools from this formula are hard.
Do not worry. You are using Nan hypoallergenic formula.why?
By the way you can express your milk and store and give when ever you are hot available at least for the first 6 months! This will take care of all the problems. In between one or two feeds of other milk can be given!

Hello there,

It was good that you nursed your baby exclusively for first 2 months. Since you are working mother, you could not continue the same. So the option available for you is milk supplements.

It is natural for babies to have alteration in their bowel movements when feeds are changed or new feeds are introduced. If there is constipation, recheck the way you prepare the formula feeds.

You can administer supplements which are low in calcium if the problem persists. Also ensure that his urine output is adequate.

If your baby passes stools once in day, it can still be considered normal and you need not worry. Do get your baby reviewed with your doctor if the condition does not improve.

Take care.

Pediatrician, Cardiology Dr. Pradeep Kumar Jain's  Response
Hello
Passing stool once in 3-5 days is normal in early infancy if there is no other associated symptoms. Formula fed baby get more constipated in compare to breast fed. You can store the breast milk in freeze for 24 hrs. So if you are able to express the breast milk then your baby will get the milk even in your absence. If it is not possible then add some sugar to the feed this will help in maintaining normal bowel pattern.
With regards
