Hi,

Thanks for the query.

I understand your concern for the baby.
from your query I understand that you have completed more than 40 weeks. The chances of finding meconium are higher after 40 weeks and more so after 42 weeks. But having said that it can occur in any week so there is no rule. Also no one can be sure if the baby has passed meconium unless the actual examination of the amniotic fluid is done which usually occurs during labor. So we cannot be sure that there is already no meconium now and think of preventing it.

Also nothing as such can prevent meconium passage as there are many factors affecting it and most are not under our control.

When patients like you come to my consulting room I have the following suggestions:
If the baby is moving about well, get a non stress test done if it is OK, just keep a watch on the babies kicks.
Get a biophysical profile and color doppler examination to ensure that the blood supply to the baby is OK and it is getting enough oxygen supply. If these are OK and movements are good, it is possible to wait for spontaneous onset of labor or induce labor.
If pregnancy is beyond 42 weeks and above tests are normal, induction must be done.
If any of the above are abnormal then depending upon the type of abnormality either induction or c section may be needed [best decided by your obstetrician] according to the urgency of the situation.

Hope this was helpful.
Best of luck and have a safe delivery.
Thanks for using HCM.
