Will The Continuous Usage Of OMEZ Cause Muscle Weakness?

I have been taking OMEZ (Omeoprazole 20mg) one per week to control my hyper-acidity. (I am a south Indian vegetarian, so I eat somewhat spicy food, but v.little oil or fat or sugar.) If I dont take the tablet my acidity builds up and I have stomach burn after every meal. This use of OMEZ for long years, is it causing any muscle weakness? These days I get my back muscles catch now and then. I am 60 yrs old man. Pls clarify and help me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Sir,
Hi & Welcome.
I appreciate your concern for the safety of Omez.

Continued use of Omeprazole is not associated with muscle weakness.

However, it can cause brittleness and thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) if used for a long period.

Since you are using it once in a week it should not have any problem with your bones even used for a longer period of time.

Muscle weakness could be due to some other causes like decreased calcium and protein intake.

You are advised to see a doctor for proper check up and treatment.

Best regards.
