Will The Baby Be Lost If The Cervix Is Open?

I am about a month pregnant (I think) & I've been bleeding for over 2 weeks. I was told by the first doctor I went to that my cervix was open & that I was miscarrying the baby. Last week I went to the obgyn & the nurse practitioner kept telling me how bleeding in the beginning is common. If my cervix is open, what are the chances of me keeping this baby?

Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

Your cervix opens so that the tissue from the pregnancy can come out during miscarriage. The bleeding you have been having is most likely the pregnancy gradually coming out. The nurse is right that about 15 percent of normal women can have bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy, but if your cervix is dilated it is extremely unlikely that this pregnancy is still viable. An ultrasound test can be done to look at the pregnancy to find out for sure what is going on.

I apologize for this unfortunate news but I hope the information I gave you is helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
