Hi there...I have had blood tests to confirm that I do have hyperthyroidism and thyrioiditis. My dr. recommends I see an endocrinologist. Here is my fear. I definitely want to figure out why this is happening, but would am curious is doing a radioactive iodine scan will kill my thyroid.\
Hello, I have gone through your query. As you have mentioned that you are suffering from thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism.
I would like to first answer your apprehension regarding radioactive iodine scan. Radioactive iodine scan is done with small amounts of radio-active Iodine. So, it will not damage your thyroid gland much. I usually attend a lots of thyroiditis patients in my clinic and we usually confirm thyroiditis with the help of blood tests.
In your case, I feel your endocrinologist will keep you on observation as this hyperthyroid phase will soon convert into euthyroid (normal thyroid functioning) and later to hypothyroid state (decreased thyroid functioning).
Generally the cause of thyroiditis is "Unknown".
I hope I have answered your query. You can get back to me in case of more queries. Thanks and regards Dr. Ankur Pruthi
