Will Hypothyroidism Cause Weight Gain?

I am a 66 yr.old female who was diagnosed with hpothyroidism 2 yrs. ago. Since that time I have gained wait steadily even though I eat the right foods, jod 30 min. everyday and weight training, biking, kayaking and I am always limiting my portions. I am so frustrated to go from a size 6, to now a size 8 and 12 lbs. gain. What can I do short of surgery?

Hi Dear,

Ye, hypothyroidism can make you gain weight. However typically, one do not gain more than 3-4 kilos with hypothyrodism ( exception being severe Myxoedema). If you are on treatment for hypothyroidism and if the blood levels are normal, you should lose the weight which you gained.

However, there are number of other causes for weight gain and you should discuss with your dietician as well.
