Will Amniocentesis Test Be Beneficial If Oscar Scan Shows Risk Of Down Syndrome?

Hi Doctor, I had my Oscar scan test done and have the following results: My age: 30years Gestational age: 11weeks + 5days Ultrasound findings: Singleton pregnancy Heart action positive, frequency 162bpm CRL: 52.3MM NT: 1mm Nasal bone length: 1.6mm Maternal Serum Biochemistry: PAPP-A: 0.6328 MoM HCG: 3.7695MOM Trisomy 21: Background risk: 1:593 Ultrasound risk: 1:2967 Biochemistry risk: 1:44 Adjusted risk: 1:312 Trisomy 18: Background risk: 1:1367 Ultrasound risk: 1:4142 Biochemistry risk: 1:9966 Adjusted risk: 1:27337 Trisomy 13: Background risk: 1:4309 Ultrasound risk: 1:84175 Biochemistry risk: 1:25166 Adjusted risk: 1:86189 I was told by my gynae that under Trisomy 21, i/m having a border line high risk for having a baby with down syndrome... and to confirm the result, I can choose to go for the amniocentesis test when i m 16weeks onwards. I am 3days to 16 weeks pregnant... I am utterly uncomfortable to go for the amniocentesis test. However, the result really saddened me. I would like to seek your advise and experience that if I forgo the amniocentesis test and go for a detailed scan at 21weeks instead, will it help to give us more assured results? Also I know that my HCG result is very high... is it this result that worsened my overall rating? By the way, when doing the baby Oscar scan, the result is in a normal range. Hi Anne,
The blood test and the ultrasound are screening tests for Downs.That is they can only give you a risk ,and it would never tell for sure.It can just say whether you are more at risk or not.
Amniocentesis is a definitive test ,it can tell for sure by checking the fetal DNA.
If we get a risk ratio of 1 in 150 ,then we advise a amniocentesis .Your adjusted risk is 1 in 312 ,so it is not necessary for you to undergo amniocentesis.
Also,do remember that amniocentesis has 1 in 100 risk of causing a miscarriage even if your baby is normal.
A high HCG is a marker for down's .
Please don't be saddened.
Decide whether you really want to undergo a test which has a 1/100 of miscarriage to find out about a condition you have 1/316 chance of having.
Your 21 week scan can definitely tell you more about your baby and its structures are normal or not, but also do remember that ultrasound need not detect all abnormalities.
