Will Propylthiouracil Intake Have Side Effects On A Lactating Mother And Her Baby?
Hello doc. I am recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism n my doc has prescribed me propylthiouracil (available as procarbizolein the market)3 times a day. I am lactating to 1.5 year old baby. My concern is about its side effects on me n baby both also would I put weight when I am taking these medicine . Also am I supposed to take medicine my whole life.? Hyperthyroidism has not much effected me yet except spotting btw periods sometimes sleeplessness and fatigued muscels. I am 31

Hyperthyroidism causes weight loss in a person so when one starts taking propylthiouracil he or she tends to gain back the lost weight. But if one gains excess weight then it can be a cause of concern.
Breastfeeding while on propylthiouracil is relatively safe as the benefits outweigh the risks. You will have to continue taking antithyroid drugs throughout your life only the dose will have to be adjusted.
