Will Microgynon Be Effective After A 7 Day Break?

I was prescribed a week's course of penicillin for throat & tonsil problems but I also take microgynon 30. I completed the course of penicillin on the 2nd day of the 7 day break from microgynon 30. Now I am starting a new packet of microgynon 30 after the 7 day beak. Will my pill be effective or should I take extra precaution? I have not had unprotected sex so currently have no extra risk of pregnancy.

Hello,

You have asked a good question. The antibiotics can reduce the efficacy of Microgynon 30. In your case the timing of taking antibiotics nearly coincides with the 7 break, so the effectiveness should be maintained.

However I would still recommend using additional protection with condoms for 7 days to be sure that the new course of pills has suppressed ovaries adequately. Yes, you are right - there is no risk of being pregnant if you have not had unprotected sex.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,

Dr. Sabina Hussain
