Why One Of The Legs Feels Slightly Numb, pins And Needles Due To The Use Of Tight Socks?

Hi, I got off an 8 hour flight yesterday morning and one of my legs feels slightly numb/ pins and needles. Pacticularly behind my knee and lower thigh. It is not painful and I am not in a risk group for DVT (I am 23, not overweight,on no medication) but I was wearing long socks under my jeans, which got a little tight and uncomfortable so I took them off about 3 hours in. My legs were a little swollen but that has now gone down. What would you recommend?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

In lengthy flights, due to immobility recurring pain, numbness or swelling in the legs are indicative of a circulatory problem, clotting disorders, varicose veins, family history of obesity.

You are suggested to do simple stretch exercises. Foot & knee lifts, ankle flexes & rotations.

While in long flights take seats with extra leg room so that you can be more comfortable. Wear light fitting clothes while on a flight.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol or addictions if any. You are suggested to visit ER & get physically examined, your treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
