Why Is My Toenail Blue And Swollen?

Hi there my partner has a problem with his large right toe and a little on the left one too. We know he has a ingrown pincer nail problem but worried it may be fungal too as he has had atletes foot before this. Now it has gone from reddish around his toe nail to light blue and looks swelled, then he started to complain that his right knee is hurting now... Pls help he says it s painfully too, thanks Vee

Pincer nail is more likely to get recurrent bacterial infection which results in pain swelling, redness in the adjoining nail folds...for this you should first get a full antibiotic course for 7 days along with NSAIDS for pain relief....once the infection is cured than you should consult a dermatologist/surgeon for partial nail avulsion for correction of your ingrown nail otherwise the infection will reoccur...you may also get a KOH mount of nail clipping to rule out any fungal infection which is though less likely as pain is not a feature of the same...thanks
