Why Is My Father Snoring And Crying Sometimes During Sleep?

Dear Doctor, My father, age 60,has got certain problems during sleep...He has the snoring problems since a long ago. Now,for the last 6 months, he speaks something loudly and sometimes cries...not clearly understandable...sometimes he remembers what he had seen in dream and why he was crying...Although he is physically fit, working as a lawyer in district court, meditates daily during worship...with no any bad habits of chewing and drinking....completely vegetarian....we are very puzzled what to do ...Please do the needful. Thanks. -Shashi Ranjan Sinha H.No.-92-B, Laxmi Park Society, Godi Road,Distt-Dahod Gujarat-389151 Mob.0000

Dear Sinha,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.
From the provided description it appears that your father is having REM sleep behavior disorder (A disorder in which person reacts his dreams).

Although REM sleep behavior disorder could occur normally but person above 50 years it act as a precursor of parkinson disease. I mean to say that he is at risk of developing parkinson disease.
It is also more common in older men, and there is often a history of a small stroke or other CNS insult in the last months or year.

It is better to see a neurologist or psychiatrist to quantify the problem and rule out the possibility of early parkinsonian features.

If it is not possible at your part a trial of clonazepam can be given with prescription from your family doctor.

Thanks
