Why is colonoscopy advised to determine cause of anemia?

Why would a doctor preform a colonoscopy on a 78 year old female with cronic asthma and COPD ? The hospital told me that my mother has fairly severe anemia despite the fact that she has been taking iron supplements for a quite a few months and they need to do this procedure to determine what is causing the anemia. Have I been misinformed?
