Why Is Bed Rest Advised After Spotting And Brown Discharge During Pregnancy?
Hi there. I am currently 16 weeks pregnant. I had heavy bleeding at 6 weeks which turned out to be a threatened miscarriage, but baby was fine. Since then I have had spotting and brownish discharge. I had cramps last week and it got very bad with some clots so I went straight to hospital. The baby was fine, and I was put on bed rest and told to take 200mg Utrogestan vaginally every evening. I would just like to ask what this is for as it was not explained properly? I would also like to know the significance of bed rest because I have to go to work otherwise I will lose my job. My work is not strenuous, it is an office job. Thank you for your help!
Hello, thank you for writing in to HCM. Light spotting in the first trimester of pregnancy is not very uncommon. But since you had heavy bleeding, the matter becomes of serious concern. Initial few months of pregnancy are very crucial as chances of a miscarriage are high. You've been advised bed rest so that the embryo's grip gets stronger and such incidences of bleeding do not recur. Utrogestan is nothing but the hormone progesterone which would help strengthen the endometrial lining( uterine wall lining) and cervix strenthening to keep the opening tightly closed. And you're asked to take it vaginally for better and faster absorption. This bed rest is important because of the above reasons mentioned. Even if your work is not strenuous, a little rest wont hurt. Remember its for the good of you and your own baby. Even traveling to work or such physical activity should better be avoided at this point of time. I hope this makes you understand the seriousness of the situation much better. You could always get back to HCM with any further doubts. All the best.
