Why Is A Urologist Referred For Klebsiella Pneumoniae Treatment?

70 yr. old male, COPD, on Symbiort and Spiriva. White cell count kept going higher in urine. Culture showed klebsiella pnuemonia ssp. Have been on Cipro for 4 wks. Urine culture still shows klebsiella and white cell count remains high. Internist wants to refer me to urologist. Why would he send me to a urologist?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It may a case of the internist being unsure of what to do, so he/she seeks specialist advice. Some types of Klebsiella are resistant to antibiotics, so it is paramount that urine was sent for cultivation before antibiotic therapy was started. Some antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections may also be caused by anomalies in the urinary tract, e.g. by congenital malformations or kidney stones, hence the referral to a urologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
