Why do thyroid medicines increase breast tenderness and size?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism earlier this year (late last year). I have been on three different types of thyroid medicine because the first two made my breasts so painful and increase in size, along with weight gain. Now, the third medicine (levoxyl) is doing the same thing (within a week, my breasts hurt all the time and gained a full cup size). Is this common? Why do thyroid medicines increase breast tenderness and size?

Hello,

The breast tenderness you reported is not related to levothyroxine. It is due to high estrogen. You should check estradiol and prolactin level.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mirjeta Guni, Endocrinologist

I am 23 years old and have just had a breast referral for a tender lump, pain and size increase in one breast. The breast specialist could not feel a lump (my GP could) and a ultrascan confirmed the breast tissue was normal. However the concern is literally over a few days my breast increased by one cup size and now 7 weeks later it is still enlarged. It has not changed during my menstrual cycles. I am due to see a consultant in 2 months time, but I have no explanation as to why my breast so suddenly has changed size and the dr said to increase so quickly was unheard of. Is there any possible causes which may have caused this and should i dismiss the problem as my ultrascan was clear? Thank you very much for your time.

Hey, Im a 25 year old male. I have been having symptoms of hypothyroidism and a few of hyperthyroidism, such as cold hands and feet, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, I never sweat even when exercising, low heart rate ( 52 BPM resting) but also have social anxiety and nervousness. I recently had a blood test done at a near by lab for cheap. TSH     1.580 Thyroxine (T4)     8.2 ug/dL T3 Uptake     35% Free Thyroxine Index     2.9 Do you see any problems there? I can t go to a doctor because i have no health insurance and have no money. I also read that hypothyroidism can play a part in delayed puberty. I didn t see any development until i was 16/17 and still look very young and feel underdeveloped. Is there anything else that could cause these symptoms? Should I get more blood work done?

Hi, I am having all the symptoms of underactive thyroid but my blood results have been returned 3 times as OK. However, visiting doctor again he examined my neck and told me I had a goiter and would take more bloods, I am feeling really ill and should also mention that I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and see a Rheumatologist twice a year. Could this result in my having an operation and after start to feel better and loose weight? Thank You

I was recently diagnosed with a low red blood cell count for which I am being tested with a blood stool sample, MRI, liver check and a possible bone marrow sample. I have missed 3 periods when except for 4 years ago when I missed 2 in a row. Prior to these 2 incidents I have never ever missed a period. 2 pregnancy tests have determined that I am not pregnant. Do you have any advice or can you help by giving me any information on what could be happening in my body. Thank you...Dianna
