Why Do Cramps Occur?

I have been having what seems like cramps or a knife being twisted feeling that is just below my belly button about 1 on both sides that will grab and bring me into a fetal position. It comes and goes and takes at times several minutes for it to stop hurting and get my breath back. What is this?
