Dear Sheila,
You mention, you had abortion in July, then they had to redo it. I am not sure whether you had
spontaneous abortion and then they had to curette out the uterus or you had undergone termination of pregnancy which remained incomplete and then you had to undergo evacuation of the uterus.
In any of the case, you have undergone evacuation of the uterus and thus the uterus should be empty now. Still if the pregnancy test is positive, following are the possible causes:
1. It takes about 10 days for the pregnancy test to become negative after an abortion. If you have done the test too early, it will report positive.
2. It is suggesting the possibility of pregnancy somewhere outside the
uterine cavity - most common site being the tubes. This is called as ectopic pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancies usually do not grow and those particularly in the tubes rupture leading to alarming type of intra-abdominal bleeding which require
blood transfusion and surgical intervention.
3. You may be having septum in the uterus or double uterus. One side of the uterine cavity might have been evacuated and the pregnancy could be in the other side.
My advice to you is to undergo
ultrasonography. It will clarify the situation. If the uterine cavity is empty, and there is only one uterine cavity, and the pregnancy test is positive even after 10 days of abortion, the cause of positive pregnancy test could be ectopic pregnancy. Please in that case submit yourself for
Laparoscopy. Unruptured ectopic pregnancy can be treated conservatively by
Laparoscopic surgery or Inj.
Methotrexate.
The very fact that still you are not having any pain in the abdomen, the possibility of unruptured ectopic pregnancy seems to be very high.
Please report to the Gynaecologist with these suggestions.
I hope this helps you.
