Why Are Babies Detected To Have Trisomy 18 Asked To Be Aborted?
Hi, my baby girl was born with Trisomy 18. She is now 15mo old with global development; however she is trying to crawl, eating by mouth, reaching for objects, can hear and see. The question is, why do most doctor consider the dx a lethal weapon? I m finding out more babies are surviving if they are not told to abort or abort on their own.

Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Babies with trisomy18 have a wide spectrum of congenital anomalies ranging from minor to lethal. All babies with trisomy18 have global developmental delay and learning disabilities. The parents are counselled regarding the future of such fetus and therefore given an option to abort such a fetus, as rearing such a baby poses a lot of social, emotional and monetary pressure.

Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Trisomy18 is a chromosomal anomaly which has a spectrum of congenital anomalies ranging from minor to lethal in nature. Most of these fetuses have central nervous system anomaly and hence are mentally challenged and subnormal. This is the reason why doctors counsel and give an option of termination of pregnancy.
