Why Am I Bleeding Weeks After Undergoing Medical Abortion?

Hi, I had a medical abortion 3 weeks ago. I'm still bleeding and I'm not sure if I've gone on my period or not which has made it confusing for me as I want to insert my Nuva ring and go back on that birth control. Can I just start using my birth control even if I'm not sure about my period?

Hello and welcome,

If you have bleeding despite a medical abortion then it is possible that there may be some bits that are left inside. An ultrasound will help with the diagnosis. If there are any retained bits then they will need to be removed by a minor procedure called check curettage.

So please get an ultrasound done first to confirm that the abortion was indeed complete.

Hope this satisfies your query.
