Which Stool Softener Is Good For Child With Blood In Stools?

My eight year old daughter had a bowel movement last night and with it came blood. The blood was not in her stool, but dripping out. My dad is a DR and said I should get a stool softener for her and add more fiber to her diet. He also said to take her off milk. She use to be lactose intollerant as a baby. I am wonder how common it is. She says she has no pain. I wonder what is good to use as a stool softener for kids.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.
I can understand your concern.

Blood in the stool could be because of several causes. It could be because of infection or some other cause. Initially one should identify the exact cause and start treatment. Stool softening will only help if it is a case of anal fissure.

Does your daughter have any pain while passing stool?

Hope this helps.
