Hi,

Conception is possible only after having intercourse during the fertile period of the menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycle is the time between first day of two periods. It is divided into two phases. First phase is the proliferative phase during the development of the egg occurs. After the egg gets fully matured, it will be released into the uterine tube for fertilization.

The process of release of egg is called Ovulation. This is followed by Secretory phase. During this phase, the released egg may or may gets fertilized. If the egg is fertilized by the sperm, it will move into the uterine endometrium and gets implanted there. Progesterone is the hormone that helps in sustaining the pregnancy. Estrogen is the hormone of the proliferative phase. Fertile period is the one between the time before 3 days of ovulation and 48 hours after ovulation.

Contraceptive pills are the drugs with these hormones. If the fertilization not occurs, the progesterone level falls and the uterine endometrium sheds, results in menstruation. Emergency pills should be taken as per advice, 4 tablets within 72 hours of intercourse or maximum of 5 days followed by 4 tablets within 24 hours of first dose. Urine pregnancy test is positive after 14 days of fertilization. Visit the gynecologist for evaluation and further management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
