Whether the steroids will affect the sex life , please guide him

My friend (male of 28 years old) who was continuously having joint pain in both the legs is being diagnosed with early stage of poly myositis after many investigations over six months and have been advised to take following medicines prescribed by the neurologist. (treatment started with orthopaedist, then rheumatologist and now neurologist) 1) Absolut 2) Wysolone 10mg 3) Pantocid 4) Shelcal OS Since Wysolone contains steroids, he was having some problems (like gastritis, head ache, etc.) while taking those pills. hence he discontinued for a week and then continued once again. but after a months time he stopped the medication completely. Few days passed by, he once again started developing joint pain on the legs and other side effects like indigestion problems, high BP, weight increase, etc. Now he is going to get married. He is now worried that usage of steroids will lead to infertility and hence hesitant to use the medicines. Could you please advice him whether to proceed with diagnosis and we need doctor's opinion on whether the steroids will affect the sex life. How long this kind of treatment to be continued? Is this disease to be informed to his would-be wife? Please guide him. Thanks

  User's Response
Polymyositis is a chronic autoimmune disease of the muscles. Its course is unpredictable. Prednisone (steroid) may have to be continued indefinitely. There are several side-effects of steroids but infertility is not a direct side-effect. It is better to take the would-be wife into confidence as the outcome is uncertain.

my wife is asthmatic patient and we had check with a Pulmonologist. He prescribed Formonide 400mg (daily) and Rupamax M (when severe allergy SOS). Now she has been taking this course for last 8-10 months. One Inhaler per day is essential for her. But now she has started feeling Joint pains (specially in Knees), excessivel hair fall also. She is also taking Thyroxin 50 mg daily (TSH 5.4) . What could be the reason for Joint pain, whether this is due to Steroids in Formonide or this is due to Thyroid. She is 32 years of age only. Request your advice , please so that she may live without much pains for her whole life.

Hello Doctor, My dad 58 is suffering from bone tb in cervical region (C5,C6,C7), he developed weakness in legs and coudnt walk w/o support. Initially he was treated by ortho who put him on 4 drug ATT and performed a minor operation of draining pus but his condition worsened after operation (paraplegic Complete motor and sensory loss in legs, no sense of bladder ) and was refrred to a neurosurgeon. He was operated again and decompression and bone grafting was performed, after one month also his condition did not improve and an MRI was taken again. Doctor said that there is a degeneration in the vertebrae which forms lower part of the graft and the screws were displaced from their position and were causing compression of spinal cord. He was again operated and the graft was removed(by a different doctor). Doctor said that due to multiple operations he has become weak and said that will keep him under observation for sometime and if required operation can be performed after a month. Meanwhile my dad has problem swollowing which was not there after 2 previous operations. He was put on complete bed rest by the previous 2 doctors but this doctor makes him sit for 5 min daily and has also said that will try to make him sit on wheel chair in some days. My question: Is my dad being treated the right way?
