When Is The Fetal Pole Spotted For The First Time?

At what gestational age range is it normal to spot the fetal pole for the first time? I had an ultrasound yesterday with an estimated pregnancy of 6w0d with a healthy gestational and yoke sac, but no fetal pole. In my other two children I was able to see a heartbeat at 6w0d and 6w2d.

Hi and welcome to HCM

Fetal pole, a thick spot near the yolk sac, is the term used for the earliest signs of a baby in an early pregnancy ultrasound -- before the baby has formed a recognizable human shape. With a transvaginal ultrasound, the fetal pole becomes visible around 6 weeks of gestation.

It should have been visible by now, but in few cases it may be visible bit late. Repeat ultrasound after few days and if still not visible it may indicate a miscarriage. Although miscarriage is one possibility, a small error in dating the pregnancy may also be the reason for non visibility, because the early pregnancy development varies so much from one day to the next.
