When Can An Orthopaedic Implant Be Inserted After A Hip Replacement Surgery?

Greetings Dr. Siegel, Orthopedic Surgeons I m a 57 female that has 4 total left hip replacements, the first was none over 15 years ago. With 2 months after my 1 hip replacement my left femur just broken in half one day. I had a few somewhat productive years were I was able to live a life again. Three years ago notice my left hip was dislocated and had problems finding a Orthopedic Dr. to take my case. After a series of falls was able to get my 4th hip replacement. Was doing rehab at home and had a few bumps along the way, but was recovering when a freak accident walking a dog fell directly on my left hip. In the hospital after surgery was surprised to have my left hip gone, my femur and 3/4 of my pelvis. I do realize infection is a great risk and why surgeons wait to operate so soon after failed implants. Now going on 18 months later and living alone face secondary issues. I have been told a custom implant is being made to replace my left hip, pelvis and femur. My question what is a reasonable time to wait for such a implant or surgery date ? Please help give me a ball park time ? I m trying so hard to not lose hope. Sincerely, Laura Parker

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Usually, the hip replacement surgery recovery is finished by the time of around 3 months period on an average, unless in exceptional cases, it may differ vary.

So on an average after 3 months of the THR surgery, one can go for the ortho implant insertion surgery without any issues theoretically if all other parameters are absolutely okay.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
